What is the object of file storage?
There are three types of storage – block, file and object. It used to be the case that the decision as to which type of storage to be used in a specific case was simple – file storage was used for, well, files; block was pretty much used for everything else. Object storage was seen as being a slow, quaint, somewhat esoteric means of dealing with storage.
Then things changed. The rise in cloud computing brought massive amounts of data into object-based storage systems such as AWS S3, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Storage. Trouble is, these systems are just pretty transparent to users – many don’t know that they are using an object-based storage system – worst still, they have little idea of the benefits that they can get from using one.
